Day 1: Tirana (Albania) – Berat – Ohrid (Macedonia)

Your adventure begins as our tour leader greets you at your hotel/airport in Tirana. From here, we set out toward Berat, often called “the city of a thousand windows”—a true architectural gem and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure.

As we walk through the winding stone lanes of the old town, you’ll be surrounded by enchanting whitewashed houses stacked gracefully along the hillsides. Dating back to the 5th–6th centuries BC, Berat began as an Illyrian stronghold and later flourished as the fortified city of Antipatrea. Remarkably, families still live within the castle walls today, preserving its living history.

Berat captivates visitors with its impressive citadel, ancient churches and mosques, museums, and charming Ottoman bridges. You’ll also learn about Onufri, the renowned icon painter celebrated across the Balkans for his distinctive crimson pigment—a hue that remains unmatched to this day.

Before leaving, we’ll explore the Gorica neighborhood, admired for its scenic riverside setting and traditional architecture. In the afternoon, we continue our journey northward, crossing the border into Macedonia, where we’ll settle in for the night in Ohrid—a lakeside town rich in history and spiritual heritage.

Day 2: Ohrid – Skopje

This morning, we continue exploring the enchanting town of Ohrid, one of the most captivating destinations in Macedonia and among the oldest continuously inhabited places in Europe. Since 1980, both Ohrid Lake and the historic city have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The area was once home to the Illyrian tribe of Encheleae, and in Roman times, the lake was known as Lyhnidas, meaning “The Lake of Light.”

Our tour takes us through Ohrid’s charming cobbled streets and sacred landmarks. We’ll visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo, renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, as well as the Church of St. Nicholas and the Halveti Hayati Tekke mosque. During the Byzantine Empire, Ohrid became a major center of Orthodox Christianity, famed for its 365 churches—one for each day of the year.

Under the Ottoman Empire, the city expanded across the surrounding hills and lakeshore, blending influences that remain visible in its distinctive architecture, ancient amphitheater, hilltop fortress, and handcrafted pearl tradition—all set against the stunning backdrop of mountains reflecting on the tranquil lake waters.

In the afternoon, we journey to Skopje, the vibrant capital of Macedonia. A fascinating mix of European, Ottoman, and Asian influences, Skopje tells its story through its contrasting quarters. The iconic Stone Bridge links the modern city center with the Old Bazaar, one of the largest and most atmospheric bazaars in the Balkans, where time-honored crafts coexist with contemporary life.

Don’t miss the towering Alexander the Great statue at the main square, and the Art Bridge, adorned with ornate lanterns and statues celebrating Macedonian artists and musicians. High above the city, the Millennium Cross crowns Mount Vodno, visible from miles away and standing as a proud symbol of Skopje.

Overnight stay in Skopje.

Day 3: Skopje – Pristina (Kosovo) – Prizren

After breakfast, we leave Skopje and head toward Pristina, the bustling capital of Kosovo. Here, we’ll visit the Newborn Monument, a striking symbol of the country’s independence and youthful spirit. A stroll along the main boulevard offers a chance to soak in the city’s energy, especially at Sheshi Nena Tereza, a lively street perfect for enjoying a coffee at one of the charming cafés. Along the way, we’ll pass Skanderbeg Square, featuring the statue of the national Albanian hero, a tribute to his enduring legacy.

From Pristina, we continue to Prizren, often regarded as Kosovo’s cultural heart. Nestled between stunning hills and the flowing river that winds through its historic center, Prizren is celebrated for its rich heritage, architectural charm, and vibrant traditions. The city’s history spans from its origins as an Illyrian settlement to its role as a crossroads of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, leaving behind a remarkable blend of architectural styles.

Prizren’s streets are a delight to explore, lined with elegant medieval houses, artisanal shops, and bridges crossing the river. The town is especially lively in August, when it hosts Dokufest, one of the world’s most renowned short film festivals. Prizren is also famous for its filigree craftsmanship—delicate metalwork that has been perfected for generations. You can visit local workshops to watch these intricate creations come to life and perhaps take home a unique souvenir.

Among the city’s many historic sites, the Sinan Pasha Mosque stands out for its intricate arabesque patterns and vibrant interior. For a breathtaking perspective, climb to the fortress above the town, offering panoramic views of Prizren’s charming streets and surrounding hills.

The afternoon is free for you to wander, shop, or simply enjoy the ambiance of this remarkable town. Overnight stay in Prizren.

Day 4: Prizren – Kruja (Albania) – Tirana

On the final day of our journey, we head to Kruja, a historic town that stands as a symbol of Albanian resistance against Ottoman expansion in the 15th century. Perched 560 meters above sea level on the slopes of Sarisalltik Mountain, Kruja’s dramatic setting combines natural beauty with centuries of history.

A stroll through Kruja’s Medieval Old Bazaar—one of the largest and oldest in the Balkans—feels like stepping back in time. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with wooden houses, craft shops, and markets where you can find everything from traditional carpets to handmade jewelry, making it the perfect place for authentic Albanian souvenirs.

At the Kruja Castle, which dates back to the 5th century A.D., you’ll discover its strategic hilltop location, designed to withstand enemy attacks. Your tour leader will guide you along some of the hidden paths used historically by locals to escape unnoticed during sieges, offering a fascinating glimpse into life in the fortress.

You will have free time to enjoy a traditional lunch, explore the castle, or shop for unique souvenirs. Later, we return to Tirana, marking the conclusion of this unforgettable journey through history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes across Albania, Kosovo, and Macedonia.
