This day trip to Pelican Island is perfect for nature lovers of all ages. If you’re drawn to wild landscapes, rare wildlife, and peaceful lakeside moments, this excursion offers a rich blend of adventure and tranquility.
Through Galicica National Park
We begin by crossing Galicica National Park en route to Lake Prespa. At 1,700 meters above sea level, we’ll pause for a photo stop with sweeping views of Lake Ohrid below. With luck, we might spot a wild animal roaming the forested slopes—but even without sightings, the mountain’s diverse plant life offers plenty to admire.
Lakeside Coffee in Stenje
Our next stop is the lakeside village of Stenje, where we’ll enjoy a coffee break before continuing toward a small fishing village. From there, we board a boat and begin our journey across Lake Prespa to Pelican Island. Along the way, keep your eyes open for pelicans—Lake Prespa is home to around 2,000 of them—as well as herons, cormorants, gulls, swallows, and perhaps even a soaring eagle.
Discovering Pelican Island
Upon arrival, we’ll start with a lakeside lunch before exploring the island’s natural and historical treasures. The island is dotted with remnants from ancient civilizations, including Roman dwellings and early Christian churches. As we walk, the guide will help you spot local wildlife—including, if you’re lucky, the elusive viper. It’s a place where nature and history intertwine in a truly magical setting.
Swim Stop in Stenje
After returning from the island, we’ll stop once more in Stenje. You’ll have time to swim in the calm waters of Lake Prespa, rounding off the day with a refreshing dip before heading back.
